What Is Nielsen Homescan?

Nielsen Homescan is a website and an app that allow you to accumulate points for scanning your receipts anytime you go shopping and once you've accumulated enough points you can redeem them for rewards. There are other ways to earn as well but that's how it works in a nutshell, is just scanning receipts as simple as that. It's owned by the Nielsen company which is a very large market research firm, they analyze consumer behavior, so you'd be helping big corporations in their market research, so I don't know if you care about that but that's why you'd be getting compensated in the first place if you're wondering.

The sign up process is fairly straightforward, you'd fill out the basic form, it's gonna ask for your address, name, email and it's only available in certain countries, so at the time of this writing: Canada, Australia, European Union countries and Thailand but that always changes. So they're not available in the US interestingly enough. If you wanna do this from the US you'll have to go to their their sister website National Consumer Panel, so I actually reviewed that one as well.
Once you've submitted this form, you would need to fill out a basic profile and this profile is gonna ask for just your household information basically and then you have to wait for them to contact you to let you know "hey, we have a spot available". So just because you signed up on here doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the opportunity to join, it's by invite only.

As far as the scanning process: How it works? Well, it's for offline purchases only, so you'd actually be going into stores but it could be in any store and you'd be shopping for any product which is kind of cool, so you go grocery shopping, your local grocer or a big name grocer or a restaurant or fill up your car and if you live in one of the European Union countries they'll actually send you their very own scanner that you can use otherwise you can use the app, so they do have an app available. You don't need to scan immediately at the store, it's probably easiest to just wait till you get home, so you're not fumbling around at the grocery store, so probably don't want to be doing that.

Another way you can earn, not only points but entries into their sweepstakes is by completing surveys. Just because you're invited to a survey doesn't mean you'll necessarily qualify, you'll need to answer some pre-screening questions first. The amount of points you'd be earning would not be a lot in dollar terms but their sweepstakes can pay quite well up to 2500 dollars for the yearly sweepstakes, so they also have a weekly monthly and quarterly sweepstake with smaller prizes and with the sweepstakes unlike with the scanning. The nice thing about sweepstakes is you actually get paid by a prepaid visa card which is the closest thing to cash you can earn on here.

Lastly, you can complete weekly diaries in exchange also for prepaid visa card money, not a lot of information on their website or on google about that opportunity but there probably aren't many opportunities to go around as far as the weekly diaries.

I don't want to make this too confusing. The main way you'd be earning on here to be very clear is with their scanning receipts, so if you aren't prepared to do that then don't sign up on here and you could only redeem those points, the scanning receipts, for physical goods not visa cards, you wouldn't be earning real money just physical goods only, so things like jewelry, they have pet accessories, electronics, home and garden, they have a whole catalog you can browse, I'm sure you could find something of interest on there.
It's going to take you a long time to accumulate enough points to really redeem them for anything because you'd be earning so little. They don't say how much you'd be earning but I'm guessing after having reviewed lots of similar websites probably about five to six cents per receipt, so it's really not that much money at all, so are you going to get rich from Nielsen Homescan? Absolutely not, you won't even be able to turn this into a decent side income. It's just a way to save a teensy tiny amount of money on things you'd be purchasing anyway, just look at it like that. As long as you're okay with that then it doesn't do any harm to sign up on here.
